MATH MILESTONES

National Math Awareness Month in April is a good time for parents to assess their child’s progress on the road to academic achievement and mastering math skills along the way.

Although children may develop academic skills at a different rate, there are general math milestones that parents should mark to keep their child on track; since children who struggle in their elementary years can quickly lose confidence or develop negative attitudes toward higher learning later.

If you find your child isn’t tracking with these grade level markers, now’s the right time to test for any math skills that may have been missed.

3rd Grade
Know the concept of multiplication
Multiply and divide single-digit numbers
Weigh objects with a scale, and understand ounces and pounds

4th Grade
Add and subtract decimals, compare decimals and fractions
Multiply multi-digit numbers by two-digit numbers
Divide multi-digit numbers by one-digit numbers

5th Grade
Add and subtract fractions, decimals and percentages
Use long division to divide large numbers by multi-digit divisors
Understand and compute perimeter, area and volume of simple objects

6th Grade
Calculate percentage
Use proportions to solve problems
Compare decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers, both positive and negative

Middle school years can be a struggle for students as well. As preteens transition from a traditional one-class environment to multiple classes and teachers, for example, parents need to reassess their student’s foundation in math skills to be fully prepared for higher learning challenges ahead.

7th to 9th Grade
Master basic math concepts and pre-algebra
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals accurately
Understand and be able to solve for an unknown (x) and solve two step equations
Be able to calculate squares and square roots
Recognize angle relationships and circle characteristics
Use geometric formulas to find perimeter, area, and circumference
Use Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing length of a side of a right triangle
