New Tutoring Club Program Creates Successful Writers
The Write Way builds writing skills for kids in grades 2-12
Tutoring Clubs of America, a leader in the development and delivery of
kindergarten through high school learning enhancement programs, today announced
that it has rounded out its suite of tutoring programs with the release of The
Write Way, a writing skills curriculum inspired by recent changes to the SAT.
While Tutoring Club has always provided individualized instruction for kids who
needed help with writing, The Write Way marks the first time that the company
has applied its unique skill-building methodology to the writing process.
"Our objective with The Write Way was to create a step-by-step process for
teaching writing skills that is consistent with the approach we take with our
math and reading programs," said Larry Schwartz, founder and CEO of Tutoring
Club. "Starting with second grade, The Write Way establishes a solid
organizational structure for essay writing that increases in skill complexity
through 12th grade."
The key components of Tutoring Club's new program include an organizational
graphic, known as the Story Web, that places a main idea at its center.
Connected to this main idea are three supporting ideas. The Write Way also
incorporates an "Aristotelian Plot Diagram" that children use to establish an
essay climax, with single line supporting ideas building to this climax. These
single lines are gradually changed into complete sentences as the essay takes
shape.
Along with this organizational approach, The Write Way emphasizes revision as a
necessary part of the writing process and teaches commensurate grammatical
skills. While the complexity of writing tasks increases with each grade level,
the tutoring sessions are based on writing complete essays. These essays start
as two paragraphs in the earlier grade levels and increase to five paragraphs
for 6th through 12th grade students. As with other Tutoring Club programs, The
Write Way uses pre-tests to create specific writing lessons for each student.
"By the time our students reach 10th grade, their essay assignments incorporate
a grading rubric that matches the 25-minute essay assignments they will
encounter in the new SAT," notes Schwartz. "More than ever, writing has become
a skill that will differentiate students seeking to perform well on their SAT -
and in competing for entrance into the best colleges and universities."
Tutoring Club learning centers are located in more than 120 cities throughout
the United States. Over the past few years Tutoring Clubs of America has
introduced its exclusive TutorAid series, which is guaranteed to improve
academic performance in less time and at a lower cost than any other program.
These programs include Rx Reading, Amazing Math, and The Write Way. Through its
TutorUp program, Tutoring Club also delivers individualized instruction in
science, foreign language and high-school mathematics, and teaches basic
learning skills such as note-taking, outlining, time management and test
preparation, including the ACT, high school placement exams (HSPT/COOP), and
most other standardized tests (ISEE/ITBS/CAT6), as well as SAT instruction.
