LEARNING DOESN’T TAKE A VACATION

Summer Learning Loss can set Children Back

Las Vegas, NV - Education should not take a back seat to fun in the sun. An athlete wouldn’t be expected to run a marathon without daily training and conditioning and the same is true with students’ learned skills. Children need to continue to train and condition their brains throughout the summer months. Like the old adage says, “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.”

Research published in the Journal of Educational Psychology documents that a typical student loses the equivalent of one month’s instruction over the course of summer break, particularly in areas of incremental learning such as mathematics and vocabulary.

Further, studies by the Clearinghouse on Early Education and Parenting (CEEP) show that summer learning programs are an effective intervention for purposes of academic retention, enrichment, and acceleration. Enrolling your children in a Tutoring Club summer camp program can help them catch-up in areas where they are struggling, freshen-up critical skill sets, and improve their self-confidence in the coming year. Tutoring Club offers a variety of summer camps that are individualized to meet each child’s needs. Below are a few ways that parents can keep their children in top academic condition over the summer.

Reading and Writing
  • Go to the library once a week. Encourage older students to check out a trilogy or a series of books to really dive into and get involved with.
  • Get your student a subscription to a magazine, like National Geographic for Kids or Time for Kids.
  • Encourage journaling. If you take a trip somewhere, have your child create a log of their adventures.
Math and Science
  • Bake together. Even baking cookies encourages your child to practice fractions while measuring ingredients.
  • When taking trips, take time to observe different plants and animals, and ask questions about habitats of the animal you see.
  • Plant a garden together. Plant identical seeds in sun and in shade to discuss how temperature and water affect the growth of each plant.
