Self Expression through Creative Writing
Creative writing is the written form of artistic expression; it is original thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Writing for fun, especially through creative writing exercises, is important. It helps students formulate their own opinions and develop the ability to clearly express them - keeping them away from the pitfall of plagiarism.
Most experts agree that plagiarism is usually done accidentally as many students don’t know how to properly paraphrase or cite work correctly. Unfortunately, for some, plagiarism is a “quick fix” that leads to academic deficiencies.
The best way to ward off students’ temptation to plagiarize is to teach them how to express themselves through their own creative writing talent. Remember, a child’s willingness to write freely is delicate. Feelings are easily hurt and discouragement can set in quickly, so encourage your child. Promote creative writing in your house with the following tips.
- Buy your child a journal – Journaling is something that can be enjoyed at any age. Encourage your child to write down momentous events in his or her life.
- Keep a family scrapbook – Have your child write family anecdotes and captions to be placed in the scrapbook.
- Keep a log of aspirations – Have your child write a letter every birthday stating what he or she wants to do or be once becoming an adult.
- Host a story night – Each member of the family writes an original story to be read aloud during story night. Visit creativewritingprompts.com for great story inspiration.
- Expose your child to literature – Whenever possible, expose your child to great works of literature, go to the library for a reading, or see a play. Exposure to literature inspires children to create their own stories.
Creative writing is a great way for a student to express feelings and to develop critical and creative thinking, but it also needs to be done correctly to avoid problems in the classroom. Parents should encourage proper spelling and grammar, as well as:
- Proper word usage for grade level
- Proper punctuation
- Clear communication of a point or idea
If you notice your child is reluctant to read or write or has frequent errors in written work, there could be a problem. The Write Way program from Tutoring Club can test your child’s reading and writing skills, identify problem areas, and create an individualized program to get your child back on track quickly and effectively.
