Students who want to be admitted to excellent colleges and universities will need to follow a rigorous academic path. For example, to be eligible for Calculus in the senior year, students must take Pre-Calculus in the junior year, Algebra II in the sophomore year, and Geometry in the freshman year. That means taking Algebra I in the 8th grade. Is your child ready? Likewise, students should be reading above grade level. Challenging writing assignments are based on challenging reading assignments. Students reading only “on the surface” will find it difficult to get high grades in literature and history classes. The new SAT places a greater emphasis on critical reading and grammar skills and requires, among other things, a half-hour essay. Is your child ready? The sciences, too, form a crucial part of education today. Fast-track students need to take chemistry, biology, and physics courses in their junior and senior years, so strong grades in general science courses during 9th and 10th grade are a must. Is your child ready? High school has become incredibly competitive. Most high achieving students report that a solid foundation was key to their success. In addition, those same students report that long-term tutoring support keeps them on track and in control.
