Tutoring Club Introduces New SAT Preparedness Curriculum
Changes in SAT prompt knowledge-based learning approach
In its first overhaul in more than a decade, the new SAT debuts on March 12,
raising questions - and anxieties - among high school students and their
parents concerning the impact of the revised exam on their college aspirations.
Responding to the changes in the SAT, the Tutoring Club, a leader in the
development and delivery of kindergarten through high school learning
enhancement programs, has released a new SAT preparedness curriculum through
its network of learning centers.
The biggest change to the SAT is the elimination of the exam's vocabulary laden
analogies section, the addition of higher math, and in a radical change, the
addition of very challenging grammar and essay sections. According to Mike
Flynn, SAT curriculum specialist for Tutoring Club, "the SAT has become much
more of a knowledge-based assessment, and success in taking the exam is now
more dependent upon a solid educational base."
In response to the new SAT, the Tutoring Club has developed a test preparedness
program that combines text-based curriculum, similar to the existing ACT, with
a diagnostic-prescriptive computer program that forms the basis of its existing
tutorial-based learning systems. The new Tutoring Club curriculum will be a
radical new approach to test prep.
"Before now, students had the choice to either get a computer program that
pointed them in the right direction but could not teach concepts, or take the
large 'turn-and-burn' courses that teach the exact same curriculum to every
student," notes Flynn. "With Tutoring Club's two-pronged attack we offer a
curriculum that strengthens specific knowledge areas on an individualized
basis."
Tutoring Club learning centers are located in more than 100 cities throughout
the United States. Over the past few years, the company has introduced its
TutorAid series to improve skills in core academic areas. These include Rx
Reading, Amazing Math, and The Write Way. Through its TutorUp program, Tutoring
Club also delivers individualized instruction in science, foreign language and
high-school mathematics, and teaches basic learning skills such as note taking,
outlining, time management and test preparation, including the ACT (which will
soon have a computerized curriculum as well), high school placement exams
(HSPT/COOP), and most other standardized tests (ISEE/ITBS/CAT6) as well as SAT
instruction.
The Las Vegas based company, which was founded in 1991 and began
franchise activities in 1999, was ranked 190 out of the top 500 franchise
businesses in 2004 by Entrepreneur Magazine based on financial strength and
stability, growth rate, and size of the franchise system. For more information
